Make your own Pop Star: Vocaloid

by Alain, December.22.2008

If you wish to wax poetic you can say that Hatsune Miku's is such a phenomenon because she has the infinite potential to whoever interacts with her. That she is only bound by her audiences' imagination. That she is an artist that becomes what her audience wishes her to be. If you wish to be utterly cynical you can say that Hatsune Miku's popularity comes from the fact she is easy to use to create funny parody videos and if there is anything the Internet loves it's funny parody videos.

All the way back in 2004 Yamaha released the synthesizer application Vocaloid. Vocaloid is a program that lets you create songs with a virtual singer from samples based on a real singer. The user enters what they want the program to sing and the program uses samples from a real singer to create virtual song. But it was not until 2007 that Vocaloid became an Internet sensation with the release of the second version of Vocaloid with the introduction of Hatsune Miku. She was one of the voice options added to the Japanese version of Vocaloid 2. With her attractive character design she quickly became popular on Nico Nico Douga, an interactive version of youtube that is popular in Japan. Her rise in popularity quickly turned her and all the other Japanese Vocaloid characters into national sensations.

People started making software applications to enhance their Vocaloid videos. You can find software to add Hatsune Miku dancing to your videos or programs to help you convert audio tracks into Vocaloid songs. You will find Hatsune Miku in her own comic, doing guest spots in anime, on racecars, and she even has her own video games. On Pixiv the Japanese version of deviant art you will see almost everyone has at least one Vocaloid picture on his or her profile. Not to mention she has been starting in any type of unauthorized porn, porn, porn.

As we all know when they make porn based on you that is the clearest sign that you have truly made it.
