Scandinavian Scene: Fever Ray
by Sarah Badr, January.08.2009
With Röyksopp's latest release Junior soon on its way, a great deal can be expected from the stellar line-up of featured guests including Robyn, Lykke Li, and the female half of The Knife duo. Because nearly four years following the success of The Understanding, who can forget Karin Dreijer's haunting vocals on 'What Else Is There?', later visualized by award-winning director Martin de Thurah and remixed by Copenhagen legend Trentemøller? After a series of successful releases including Silent Shout and Deep Cuts, The Knife have since made their mark on the European circuit and beyond with their uniquely resonant electronic trills, warped voices, masked faces, and surreal visuals projected at brightly lit live shows. And all of that while admirably being reluctant to become mainstream.
As though that weren't enough, Dreijer is set to release Fever Ray, the eponymous debut album for her new solo project, out on the same day as Röyksopp's (March 23rd) and paving the way for a tour later on in the year. Fever Ray's first single, 'If I Had a Heart' has already been released digitally alongside its video premier. From the same talent behind clips for The Knife, José González (covered The Knife's 'Hearbeats', featuring in Bravia's 'bouncy balls' ad) and fellow Rabid Records musician Jenny Wilson, this stunning feature was directed by Malmö-based artist Andreas Nilsson.
