Seripop: Controlled Chaos

by Elizabeth Fodde-Reguer, August.04.2009

One night at a concert at the Mercury Lounge, I spied an amazing gig poster tacked on the wall and I knew I had to have it. I employed my tall friend to reach up and rip it (carefully) off the wall. When I got a closer look, I noticed in small print on the bottom left the word "Seripop." When I got home that night and did some internet research, I was blown away by what I found.

Seripop are the Montreal based artist duo Chloe Lum and Yannick Desranleau who design gig posters, prints, books, and album covers, alongside performing in their band AIDS Wolf. The couple hand print all their posters combining a visceral style, bold colors, and intricately designed lettering in a single work. Seripop does not shy away from putting their gig posters in the context they are meant to be seen in--plastered on street poles and posted on venue walls--which is remarkable considering that they have shown in galleries in the US and Canada. They have made posters for bands like An Albatross, The Rapture, The Blood Brothers, Deerhunter, and many, many more. Visually caustic and stimulating, the works invite a lingering and attentive observation of interlocking shapes and dynamic compositions.
